DOJ Slams Newsom’s Lawsuit: Fight Over National Guard Deployment Heats Up

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a strongly worded response to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit challenging President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles. The DOJ argues that Newsom’s legal action is a politically motivated attempt to undermine the President’s authority.

In a June 11th filing, the department’s attorneys accused Newsom of engaging in a “crass political stunt endangering American lives.” They contend that the Governor’s lawsuit is an attempt to prevent the President from exercising his constitutional and statutory power to protect federal personnel and facilities amid the ongoing riots in Los Angeles.

Newsom’s lawsuit, filed on June 9th, alleges that President Trump illegally seized control of California’s National Guard. The legal battle now hinges on the federal judge’s decision on whether to grant Newsom’s request to limit the President’s deployment of these troops. The outcome will have significant implications for the balance of power between the federal government and individual states, particularly during times of civil unrest.
