The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released concerning new data revealing a significant surge in the prevalence of the COVID-19 NB.1.8.1 variant within the United States. This variant, initially identified in mainland China, now accounts for an estimated 37% of all current infections.
Reports from China indicated a staggering 160% increase in COVID-19 cases last month, largely attributed to NB.1.8.1. This alarming trend is now mirroring itself in the US. CDC data from June 13th places NB.1.8.1 as the second most prevalent strain nationwide between May 25th and June 7th, trailing only the LP.8.1 variant. This marks a dramatic change from late May, when NB.1.8.1 wasn’t even being actively tracked by the CDC.
The rapid spread of NB.1.8.1 highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and underscores the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts are closely monitoring the situation and urging continued adherence to public health guidelines.
