For nearly a decade, 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the Canadian Prime Minister, has sat vacant. Despite this, Canadian taxpayers continue to shoulder tens of thousands of dollars annually for its upkeep. The current Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has made it clear he won’t be addressing the dilapidated state of the building anytime soon.
In a May press conference, PM Carney shifted responsibility, stating that the National Capital Commission holds the authority to determine 24 Sussex’s fate. He explicitly stated (in French): “It’s not a challenge for today, this month, this year, and it’s probably a challenge for this mandate.” This statement comes despite numerous proposals for the building’s renovation put forth by previous Prime Ministers.
The ongoing neglect of 24 Sussex raises questions about the allocation of taxpayer funds and the priorities of the current government. The building’s deteriorating condition highlights a significant issue that seemingly remains low on the political agenda for the foreseeable future.
