Waymo Drives On: Expanding Autonomous Services Despite LA Riots

Waymo, the leading autonomous vehicle technology company, is pressing forward with its expansion plans in California. Despite the recent damage to some of its vehicles during the Los Angeles riots, Waymo announced a significant service area expansion, starting June 17th.

The company took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the exciting news: “Ride to more places in the Bay and L.A. … starting today in [San Francisco], with new areas coming to L.A. later this week.” This expansion demonstrates Waymo’s commitment to its autonomous ride-hailing service, even in the face of adversity.

In the Bay Area, Waymo’s reach now extends to include Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, and Menlo Park, adding to its existing coverage in San Francisco, Daly City, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Mountain View. This considerable expansion significantly broadens access to Waymo’s driverless technology for residents of the region.

The expansion isn’t limited to the Bay Area. In Southern California, Waymo’s service is no longer confined to Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Koreatown, Santa Monica, and Culver City. The company’s X post confirmed the addition of Silverlake, Downtown Los Angeles, and Inglewood to its operational area, marking a substantial step in bringing autonomous transportation to a wider range of Los Angeles communities.

This bold move showcases Waymo’s resilience and unwavering belief in its autonomous driving technology. The company’s continued expansion despite the recent setbacks highlights its confidence in its safety protocols and its dedication to providing innovative transportation solutions.
