Santa Clara County is grappling with a devastating surge in homelessness, reaching a record high of 10,711 individuals according to the latest point-in-time count conducted in January 2025. This represents an alarming 8.2 percent increase compared to 2023’s figures (9,903).

The data, crucial for securing federal funding and shaping homelessness strategies within the county, paints a grim picture. Experts concur that the escalating numbers reflect a concerning trend: more individuals are entering homelessness than are successfully exiting it within the region.

While the overall number is deeply concerning, a closer look reveals a 30 percent increase in sheltered individuals. The county attributes this rise to improved utilization of existing shelter beds and a notable expansion of overall shelter capacity.
