Free School Meals in England: A Quarter of Pupils Now Eligible

The number of children in England eligible for free school meals has reached a significant milestone. New figures from the Department for Education reveal that over one in four pupils – a staggering 2.17 million children – now qualify for this vital support.

This represents a substantial increase of 77,700 children compared to January 2024, pushing the eligibility rate from 24.6% to 25.7% of the total school population. The rising number underscores the growing need for financial assistance within families.

This surge in eligibility comes as the government prepares to further expand the program. Starting September 2026, all pupils in families receiving Universal Credit will be eligible for free school meals, a significant policy change aiming to alleviate the financial burden on many households.

Currently, the eligibility criteria for free school meals are quite strict. In England, families receiving Universal Credit must have an annual income (after tax and excluding benefits) of less than £7,400 to qualify.

The upward trend in free school meal eligibility highlights the challenges many families face in meeting the cost of living and ensuring their children receive nutritious meals at school. The upcoming expansion of the program promises to offer significant relief to countless families across England.
