Alberta Explores Hudson Bay Shipping Over Quebec Pipeline for East Coast Oil

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has suggested that shipping Alberta oil to East Coast refineries via the Hudson Bay could be a more viable option than relying on a pipeline through Quebec. This statement came on June 2nd, just before a significant first ministers’ meeting in Saskatoon.

The meeting, which included Prime Minister Mark Carney, focused on prioritizing major infrastructure projects. Each province and territory presented their wish lists, with a proposed terminal in Churchill, Manitoba, receiving considerable interprovincial backing.

When questioned by reporters about her approach to Quebec and the prospects of a pipeline traversing the province, Premier Smith expressed her desire for such a project but acknowledged a pragmatic approach. She stated, “I’ve got to work with where I think we’re going to have the most success.” This suggests that the feasibility and potential for quicker progress of the Hudson Bay shipping route are key factors in Alberta’s current strategy.
