Tragically, four e-scooter riders have lost their lives on Queensland roads this year, prompting a renewed push for safety by authorities. This alarming statistic, coupled with a surge in traffic violations, highlights a critical need for increased rider awareness and responsible e-scooter use.
Data released between November 2022 and December 2024 reveals a concerning trend. Queensland police issued over 2,700 fines to personal mobility device (PMD) users for unsafe practices during this period. A staggering 65% of these fines were for violations like riding without helmets, carrying passengers, or using e-scooters in prohibited areas.
The alarming rate of helmetless riding continues, with 1,094 fines already issued in the current year alone for this offense. The overall toll is even more sobering; eight people died in e-scooter or e-bike accidents in 2024. These figures underscore the serious risks associated with irresponsible e-scooter use.
Current Queensland law restricts PMD usage to roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less, explicitly banning their use on highways and major thoroughfares. This regulation, however, clearly isn’t enough. The rising number of fatalities and fines emphasizes the urgent need for riders to prioritize safety and adhere strictly to the law to prevent further tragedies.
