After four years of intense negotiations, the UK and EU have reached a landmark agreement on Gibraltar’s post-Brexit future, ushering in a new era of cooperation and seamless border crossings.
The cornerstone of this groundbreaking deal, announced on Wednesday, is the establishment of a ‘fluid border’ eliminating the need for passport or customs checks at the Gibraltar-Spain border. This ensures the continued smooth flow of approximately 15,000 cross-border workers daily, maintaining vital economic links.
A sophisticated dual-control system at the airport and seaport will allow Spanish officials to conduct Schengen-compliant entry checks, while Gibraltar retains its own independent immigration and policing powers. This innovative approach balances the needs of both sides, ensuring security while maintaining Gibraltar’s sovereignty.
Furthermore, the agreement introduces a bespoke customs arrangement that facilitates the free movement of goods between Gibraltar and the EU. To ensure seamless trade, Gibraltar will align its regulations with EU rules on tobacco duties and indirect taxation. This carefully crafted approach minimizes disruption and protects Gibraltar’s economic prosperity.
