Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano: A Spectacle of Nature’s Power
Guatemala’s Fuego volcano unleashed a dramatic display of power on Friday, sending ash plumes soaring miles into the sky. Authorities responded swiftly, implementing a precautionary evacuation of over 700 residents from nearby communities in Escuintla, Sacatepequez, and Chimaltenango. The impressive eruption, lasting approximately 30 hours, prompted the mobilization of emergency services and local support.
The INSIVUMEH (Guatemala’s seismology agency) reported a significant build-up of lava around the volcano’s crater. This imposing spectacle, located roughly 11 miles from Antigua Guatemala, caused ash clouds to reach altitudes of around 3 miles. The impressive visuals captured the attention of locals and experts alike.
CONRED (Guatemala’s disaster agency) played a crucial role in the evacuation process, ensuring the safety of numerous families. Many families, including those with young children, sought refuge in nearby shelters, where they spent the night on cots provided by emergency services. Thankfully, as the intense activity subsided, the evacuation order was lifted, marking an end to this dramatic volcanic event.
