In a significant appointment, Prime Minister Mark Carney has named Michael Sabia, the CEO of Hydro-Québec, as the new Clerk of the Privy Council. This role marks the highest-ranking position within Canada’s civil service.

The Prime Minister’s announcement, made on June 11th, highlighted Sabia’s extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. Carney emphasized that Sabia’s expertise will be instrumental in achieving the government’s ambitious goals: building the “strongest economy in the G7” and reducing the cost of living for Canadians.

In the official statement, Carney expressed confidence in Sabia’s ability to deliver on the government’s mandate and its commitment to prioritizing core objectives. “Mr. Sabia will help us deliver on this mandate and our government’s disciplined focus on core priorities,” the statement read.

The announcement also included a thank you to John Hannaford for his service as Clerk of the Privy Council and congratulations on his upcoming retirement. Sabia is set to assume his new duties on July 7th.
