Jailhouse Romance Turns Sour: Ex-Employee Charged in Mass Inmate Breakout

A former New Orleans jail employee is facing charges after allegedly helping orchestrate a daring mass escape that involved her convicted murderer boyfriend. Darriana Burton, 28, was arrested on Monday and is one of at least 16 individuals accused of assisting in the breakout of ten inmates from the Orleans Justice Center on May 16th.

The escape, which saw inmates exploit a faulty cell door, a removed toilet, and a hole in the wall before scaling a barbed wire fence, was aided by what authorities describe as inside help. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours while a lone guard was briefly away.

While many involved in the brazen jailbreak are now in custody, two remain at large: Burton’s boyfriend, Derrick Groves, a convicted murderer, and Antoine Massey, who faces charges including rape, kidnapping, and domestic battery. The ongoing manhunt for these two fugitives continues.
