A Los Angeles County judge has ruled that a man accused of stalking Jennifer Aniston and causing significant damage to her property is mentally incompetent to stand trial. This decision, made in a mental health court on Thursday, follows evaluations by two separate psychiatrists who independently concluded that the defendant, 48-year-old Jimmy Wayne Carwyle of Mississippi, lacks the mental capacity to participate in his felony trial.
Judge Maria Cavalluzzi stated, “The court finds the defendant is not currently competent to stand trial. Criminal proceedings will remain suspended.” Carwyle, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of vandalism and stalking the Friends star, appeared in court via video link. His appearance differed significantly from previous hearings; his previously unkempt hair and beard were neatly shorn, and he was dressed in bright yellow county jail attire, a stark contrast to his previous appearances in a suicide prevention smock.
The judge’s ruling effectively halts the criminal proceedings until Carwyle’s mental state improves to a point where he can understand and participate in his own defense. The details surrounding Carwyle’s mental health have not been publicly disclosed.
