Tensions escalated in downtown Los Angeles on June 8th as anti-ICE protests entered their third day. Hundreds of demonstrators, many waving Mexican flags, rallied outside the Edward R. Roybal federal building, home to the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies. The scene was marked by a heavy police presence, including federal officers and the California National Guard, who formed a perimeter around the building to protect it from the increasingly vocal crowd.
Protesters, just yards from the building’s entrance, voiced their anger against recent ICE raids using bullhorns, chanting expletive-laden slogans directed at both police and ICE agents. Signs denouncing the raids were prominently displayed. In one dramatic incident, a protester climbed onto the roof of a nearby minivan, holding a sign that read “National Guard LOL.”
The anti-ICE graffiti covering the walls of the federal building provided a stark backdrop to the demonstrations. The LAPD ultimately declared several of the gatherings unlawful assemblies, highlighting the growing intensity of the ongoing protests.
