Florida Senator Marco Rubio has publicly reaffirmed his strong support for Rosa María Payá Acevedo’s candidacy for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). This significant endorsement comes as Payá, a prominent Cuban activist and daughter of the late Oswaldo Payá, vies for a commissioner position within the Organization of American States (OAS).
Rubio, who initially nominated Payá in March, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to reiterate his backing. His statement highlighted Payá’s extensive history of advocating for human rights, freedom, and democratic ideals across the Americas, calling her dedication a testament to her lifelong commitment to building a more prosperous region.
Payá’s father, Oswaldo Payá, was a leading figure in Cuba’s Christian Liberation Movement before his death in 2012. Her nomination to the IACHR, a key human rights body within the OAS, is widely seen as a significant development in the ongoing efforts to promote human rights and democracy in the region.
