Quebec Senator Larry Smith has made a significant return to the Conservative Senate caucus, marking a notable shift after nearly three years as a member of the independent Canadian Senators Group. This move adds to a recent surge of senators joining the Conservative ranks, making Smith the third to do so this month alone.

The welcome was warm and effusive. In a statement released on June 12th, Conservative Senator Leo Housakos, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, praised Senator Smith’s reputation:

“Senator Smith is widely respected for his principled approach, deep knowledge of public policy, and tireless work ethic,” Housakos stated. “He has always been a strong advocate for Quebec and for common-sense conservative values. We are very pleased to have him back.”

This isn’t an isolated incident; the Conservative caucus has seen a recent influx of new members. Senator Mary Jane McCallum from Manitoba joined on June 10th, followed by Senator David Richards on June 3rd. Interestingly, both McCallum and Richards were previously non-affiliated senators, originally appointed by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Senator Smith’s return is undoubtedly a boost for the Conservative Party, adding experience and strength to their Senate contingent. The reasons behind his decision to rejoin the Conservatives remain to be seen, but his addition signifies a potential shift in the Senate’s political landscape.
