Social Security Fairness Act: 91% of Expanded Benefit Claims Processed

Good news for millions of Social Security recipients! The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced significant progress in processing claims related to the Social Security Fairness Act. This landmark legislation, signed into law in January by former President Joe Biden, eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).

These provisions previously reduced Social Security benefits for certain public sector workers who also received pensions not covered under Social Security. The SSA’s latest update reveals that a remarkable 91% of the total claims filed between February 25th and May 30th have been successfully processed. This translates to higher payments and retroactive payments for approximately 3 million beneficiaries.

According to data published on the SSA website (last updated June 1st), the agency is diligently working to ensure everyone eligible receives the benefits they deserve. The elimination of WEP and GPO represents a significant victory for fairness and ensures that these dedicated public servants receive the full Social Security benefits they’ve earned.

This impressive processing rate demonstrates the SSA’s commitment to efficient and timely delivery of benefits. For those who haven’t yet filed a claim, there is still time to do so and potentially receive retroactive payments.
