US Senators Push for Stronger Space Alliance with Quad Nations to Counter China and Russia

A new bipartisan bill aims to significantly boost space cooperation between the United States, Australia, India, and Japan – the key members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad). This strategic move comes in response to growing concerns about the increasingly assertive space programs of Russia and China.

Spearheaded by Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), the legislation (S. 1946) seeks to create a more unified front in space, enhancing capabilities and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Senator Bennet, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, highlighted the urgent need to counter the dangerous space capabilities and reckless behavior of China and Russia. He emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration with Quad partners to maintain a secure and accessible space environment.

Senator Cramer, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, is equally concerned about the threat posed by China and Russia. The bill’s introduction marks a significant step towards formalizing and strengthening the already existing collaborative efforts between these four nations in the crucial field of space exploration and security. This initiative underscores the growing importance of the Quad partnership as a critical force for maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
