Alaska’s 13 Million Acres: Biden-Era Drilling Limits Set for Repeal

The Department of the Interior ignited a firestorm of debate on June 2nd with its proposal to overturn a 2024 regulation limiting oil and gas operations across Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A). This Biden-era policy, according to the Interior Department, is an excessive constraint on domestic energy production.

This significant move would lift restrictions impacting approximately 13 million acres, effectively reinstating the regulatory system in place prior to the 2024 rule. The proposed change aims to unlock greater energy exploration and production in the region.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated, “Congress was clear: the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska was set aside to support America’s energy security through responsible development. The 2024 rule ignored that mandate, prioritizing obstruction over production and undermining our ability to harness domestic resources at a time when American energy independence has never been more critical. We’re restoring the balance and putting our energy future back on track.”

The reversal has ignited significant debate, raising concerns among environmental groups regarding the potential impact on Alaska’s delicate ecosystem and the future of climate change efforts. The proposed repeal will now undergo a public comment period before any final decision is made.
