Australia’s air power is set for a significant upgrade with a $3.08 billion (US$2 billion) investment in cutting-edge technology for its fighter jet fleet. This substantial investment will equip the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) with enhanced surveillance and attack capabilities, significantly bolstering its defense posture.
The deal, approved by the U.S. State Department, includes 60 Global Lightning Joint Tactical Terminal Transceivers (JTT-X) and 24 Next Generation Electronic Attack Units (NGEAU). These advanced systems will be integrated into the RAAF’s EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft and F/A-18F Super Hornet multirole fighter jets.
According to the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), the JTT-X is a game-changer. This advanced communications terminal provides secure, near real-time transmission of crucial battlefield intelligence and targeting data via satellite networks. This functionality essentially transforms each aircraft into a sophisticated, autonomous surveillance drone alongside its traditional fighter jet roles.
The addition of the NGEAU further strengthens the RAAF’s capabilities, promising improved electronic warfare and offensive capabilities. This significant investment represents a major step towards modernizing Australia’s defense capabilities, ensuring its air force remains at the forefront of technological advancement in the region.
