California Assembly Approves $10 Billion Affordable Housing Bond: A Giant Leap Towards Solving the Housing Crisis?

California is taking a significant step towards tackling its affordable housing crisis. The state Assembly recently passed Assembly Bill 736, a $10 billion affordable housing bond measure, sending it to the June 2nd, 2026, statewide primary election ballot.

Championed by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), AB 736 aims to provide much-needed funding for a variety of programs designed to assist low-income families and individuals experiencing homelessness. This crucial funding would support existing initiatives like the Multifamily Housing Program, CalHOME, and the Joe Serna Jr. Farmworker Housing Grant, all dedicated to increasing access to affordable rental housing and homeownership opportunities.

The bill’s passage follows the introduction of a companion bill in the Senate, SB 417, by Senator Christopher Cabaldon (D-Yolo), showcasing bipartisan support for this critical initiative. The success of AB 736 marks a major milestone in the fight for affordable housing in California, but the journey is far from over. The bond measure now faces the challenge of securing voter approval in the upcoming election.

This substantial investment represents a potential game-changer in addressing California’s persistent housing shortage. The impact of this proposed funding could be transformative, offering hope for thousands of families struggling to find safe and affordable housing. The coming months will be crucial as the state prepares to present this vital measure to California voters.
