Canada’s Delayed Foreign Agent Registry: Tories Demand Action

Conservative MPs are urging the federal government to swiftly implement a foreign agent registry, mandated by legislation passed almost a year ago. Concerns are growing about the lack of progress in combating foreign interference.

During a House of Commons address on June 6th, Tory MP Michael Cooper voiced strong criticism, stating that Canada has “become a playground for foreign interference.” He highlighted the discrepancy between the legislation passed last year – which includes the creation of a crucial foreign influence registry – and the government’s inaction.

Cooper’s pointed question echoed the concerns of many: “It has been a year since the legislation passed. Where is the registry?” He further emphasized the complete lack of progress, noting, “There is no office established, no commissioner appointed, and no timeline provided.”

The delay in establishing the registry raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to tackling foreign interference and protecting Canada’s national security. The Conservatives’ call for immediate action underscores the urgency of the situation.
