Historic Drop in Illegal Border Crossings: Zero Releases in May

May 2025 witnessed a dramatic shift in US border crossings, marking a significant victory for border security efforts. According to a June 17th statement from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Border Patrol (USBP) reported zero illegal immigrants released into the United States last month. This represents a staggering decrease from the over 62,000 releases during May 2024.

The overall number of illegal immigrants encountered at the southwest border also plummeted. May 2025 saw a mere 8,725 encounters, a sharp contrast to the 117,905 encounters recorded in May 2024. This translates to a 93% reduction in illegal crossings compared to the previous year.

CBP Acting Commissioner Pete Flores attributed this success to the administration’s support, stating, “Under the leadership of this administration, CBP has received historic support resulting in another 93 percent decrease in illegal crossings along the southwest border this month when compared with last year.” He further emphasized the ongoing trend of historically low border numbers, highlighting the effectiveness of current enforcement strategies in securing the nation’s borders and safeguarding American communities.
