A devastating speedboat accident in North Vancouver’s Cates Park on Saturday left one 11-year-old child dead and another fighting for their life in critical condition. The children were reportedly being towed on an inner tube when struck by the vessel.

According to North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, the speedboat driver was apprehended and is currently in custody. Speed and alcohol are being investigated as potential contributing factors to the tragic incident. Cpl. Sahak described the event as “a major incident that required a response from multiple agencies,” highlighting the scale of the emergency response.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. Despite their best efforts, paramedics were unable to save the 11-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The second child sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized.
